Former Joondalup and Wanneroo Councillor John Hollywood Remembered for Community Service
The local government community in Perth is mourning the loss of John Hollywood, a dedicated former councillor who served both the City of Wanneroo and the City of Joondalup. Mr Hollywood passed away at the age of 78, leaving behind a legacy of more than a decade of public service.
A Life Dedicated to Local Government and Community Advocacy
John Hollywood is being remembered as a passionate community advocate and a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His commitment to local government spanned several years, beginning with his tenure as a councillor at the City of Wanneroo from 1997 to 1998.
Upon the formation of the City of Joondalup, Mr Hollywood became an inaugural councillor, serving from 1999 to 2005. His dedication to public service extended beyond council chambers, as he also served as a Justice of the Peace for more than three decades.
Environmental Campaigns and Community Impact
Throughout his career, Mr Hollywood campaigned strongly to protect the environment and natural assets of the local area. He was instrumental in efforts to preserve significant bushland areas, including Burns Beach Bushland and Alkimos Bushland.
His environmental advocacy demonstrated his deep commitment to safeguarding Perth's natural heritage for future generations, a passion that defined much of his public service work.
Tributes and Memorial Service
At the City of Joondalup's recent Annual General Meeting, a minute's silence was held to honour Mr Hollywood's life and service. Mayor Daniel Kingston expressed the city's sadness at the news of his passing.
"On behalf of the City of Joondalup, I offer our deepest and sincerest condolences to Kerry and John's loved ones, his family, and his friends," Mayor Kingston said during the meeting.
"The city has lost a former colleague, friend, and advocate who put the community and family at the forefront of everything he did. Thank you for serving our local community for so many years with honour, energy, enthusiasm, and dedication."
Family Legacy and Funeral Arrangements
Mr Hollywood is survived by his wife Kerry, who also served as a City of Joondalup councillor from 2006 to 2021, continuing the family's commitment to public service. He also leaves behind three sons and eight grandchildren.
The funeral service for John Hollywood will be held on Saturday, February 7, at St Simon Peter Catholic Church in Ocean Reef, beginning at 1pm. The community is expected to gather to pay their respects to a man who dedicated so much of his life to serving others and protecting the local environment.
