A search is currently underway for a man believed to be trapped inside a vehicle that plunged into the water at Audley Weir in the Royal National Park overnight.
Incident Details
The vehicle was travelling along Audley Road through the Royal National Park around 1:15am on Wednesday, May 6, when the incident occurred. According to a NSW Police spokesperson, the car left the roadway, entered the water, and became submerged with two occupants on board. A passenger, a man believed to be in his 20s, became trapped in the vehicle.
Driver Escapes, Passenger Missing
The 20-year-old male driver managed to escape from the car and was taken to hospital for mandatory testing. Emergency services remain at the scene, searching for the missing passenger and the submerged vehicle. Police divers are expected to arrive later in the morning to assist with the operation.
Road Closures and Diversions
Audley Road is closed in both directions from the Princes Highway at Loftus, and motorists are urged to avoid the area. Those travelling to and from Bundeena are advised to use McKell Avenue at Waterfall as an alternative route.
Investigation Launched
Police have established a crime scene and have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Further updates will be provided as the search and investigation progress.
