The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a hazardous swell warning for the Illawarra Coast, urging caution for beachgoers and boaters as wet and windy conditions set in. The warning is in effect until midnight on May 27, with large and powerful surf expected to create dangerous conditions for activities such as surfing, rock fishing, and crossing bars by boat.
Current Conditions
Swells of up to 2.5 metres are forecast, accompanied by north to northeasterly winds of around 10 knots. The hazardous conditions are expected to persist through the afternoon, making coastal activities particularly risky.
Tuesday's Forecast
Tuesday will bring similar conditions, with winds strengthening to 20 knots offshore during the day. There is also a chance of thunderstorms developing in the afternoon and continuing into the evening.
Wednesday and Thursday Outlook
Wednesday will see a continuation of the dreary weather, with an 80 per cent chance of rain and a possible thunderstorm as the sun sets. Thursday is forecast to have a 95 per cent chance of showers, with the first swell between 1.5 and 2 metres, followed by a second southerly swell of around 1 metre.
Safety Advice
Authorities are urging people to stay out of the water and avoid coastal activities such as rock fishing and swimming. Boaters are advised to carry safety equipment and log on with their local Marine Rescue radio base, ensuring they have a safety management plan in place.
The Bureau of Meteorology alert comes as the Illawarra region braces for a wet and windy week ahead. Residents and visitors are encouraged to stay informed about weather updates and exercise caution near the coast.
