OX2, a leading renewable energy company, has successfully reached financial close on its $302 million Muswellbrook Solar Farm and Battery Storage project in New South Wales. This milestone marks a significant step forward in Australia's transition to clean energy.
Project Details
The Muswellbrook Solar Farm will have a capacity of 100 megawatts (MW), paired with a 50 MW battery energy storage system. Located in the Hunter Valley region, the project is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 35,000 homes annually. Construction is slated to begin in early 2024, with commercial operations targeted for late 2025.
Financial and Community Impact
The project represents a total investment of $302 million, with financing secured from a consortium of lenders, including major Australian banks. OX2 will oversee the construction, operation, and maintenance of the facility. The development is projected to create around 200 jobs during the construction phase and several permanent positions once operational.
Local community benefits include a community benefit fund, which will support local initiatives and infrastructure projects. OX2 has also committed to using local suppliers and contractors where possible, boosting the regional economy.
Environmental Benefits
The Muswellbrook Solar Farm and Battery will displace approximately 200,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, equivalent to taking over 40,000 cars off the road. The battery storage component will enhance grid stability and enable greater integration of renewable energy into the National Electricity Market.
OX2's managing director for Australia, Mark Robertson, stated: "This project demonstrates our commitment to accelerating the clean energy transition in Australia. We are proud to partner with local stakeholders and financial institutions to deliver this landmark project."
Strategic Importance
The project aligns with the New South Wales government's Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap, which aims to deliver 12 gigawatts of renewable energy and 2 gigawatts of storage by 2030. The Muswellbrook Solar Farm and Battery will play a key role in meeting these targets while supporting the state's energy security and affordability.
OX2 has a strong track record in Australia, with several other renewable energy projects in development. The company continues to expand its portfolio in the region, contributing to the country's goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
