Hunter Water has issued a warning to residents in the Lower Hunter region to brace for potential water restrictions this winter, following an exceptionally hot and dry April that placed sustained pressure on water supplies.
Record Water Usage and Declining Storage
The utility reported that water usage surged to 20-year highs last month, with average consumption reaching approximately 200 litres per person per day. Meanwhile, storage levels dropped to their lowest point in five years, raising concerns about the region's water security.
Call for Conservation
Hunter Water is urging residents to reduce their water consumption as long-range weather forecasts indicate ongoing dry conditions. The utility emphasised that small changes in daily habits could make a significant difference in preserving supplies.
Restriction Triggers
Water restrictions are automatically triggered when overall supplies fall below 60 per cent. Storages have been steadily declining in recent months and were recorded at 62 per cent on Wednesday, May 13. If the trend continues, restrictions could be implemented within weeks.
