The Mandurah Hockey Club has reached a significant milestone as it prepares for the 2026 season, celebrating the club’s 50th anniversary. Founded in 1976 with junior and senior teams in local competitions, the club has grown to become the oldest in the district, now fielding two women’s teams, a men’s side, and five junior teams.
A Legacy of Family and Community
Coach Bradford Johnson, who joined the club in 1977, highlighted the family-oriented atmosphere as a key factor in the club’s longevity. “The culture that the club has instilled over the years has been very tightly bonded,” he said. “There have been fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, playing alongside one another here for years. You don’t see that in many other clubs, and I think it shows the strong family values that the club holds.”
Johnson expressed pride in being part of the club, noting its resilience. “We’re a really strong club. I’ve seen many others come and go throughout the years, but we’ve managed to stick around, and I think it comes down to the people,” he said. “Besides the players, we also have a very dedicated committee and great coordinators who really nurture our juniors. It’s a real strength of the club to bring up these juniors in a way that makes them want to stick around as seniors.”
Season Kickoff and Anniversary Celebrations
The club will begin its season with a home game on May 2. Johnson confirmed that the milestone anniversary will be celebrated throughout the year, with various events planned to honor the club’s history and community.
