A man who dressed as a ninja and strapped weapons to his body before randomly attacking an elderly couple has been jailed. On Wednesday, Ak Mohammad Hanif Bin Pg Abd Wahab, 37, was sentenced to three years behind bars over the attack in Yangebup, in Perth’s south, on New Year’s Eve in 2024.
Grandmother Teresa Urbaniak was walking her dogs at a park across the road from her home when Wahab, who admitted to being high on mushrooms and cannabis at the time, sprinted towards her. Wahab was dressed as a ninja, had covered his head with a balaclava, and was armed with two Japanese daggers, knuckle dusters and a throwing star strapped to his body when he struck Urbaniak to the face. As she tried to escape, he scratched her chest, ripped chains from around her neck and sliced her arm. The grandmother ran for her life but was followed home.
Wahab tried to get inside but was confronted by Urbaniak’s husband Piotr, who wrestled with the intruder before pinning him to the floor until police arrived. Wahab was found guilty of going armed so as to cause terror and aggravated assault earlier this year. He has been sentenced to three years in prison but if granted parole could be up for early release in January 2027.
Urbaniak said she thought she was going to die and the incident has left her feeling unsafe, even in her own home. “Absolutely I could not trust anymore. I’m scared all the time. If I go through the day (I’m) still scared... watching behind my back.”
