Adelaide Hills Restaurant Destroyed in Suspicious Blaze

Detectives are investigating a fierce blaze that tore through an Adelaide Hills restaurant on Tuesday night, leaving the long-running venue completely destroyed.

Fire Engulfs Mustard Seed in Hahndorf

Emergency crews were called to Mustard Seed in Hahndorf on Mt Barker Rd, about 25km from Adelaide, about 8.30pm on Tuesday after reports of flames bursting from the windows. When police arrived, the building was already fully engulfed.

Mount Barker Rd was shut between Pine Ave and Auricht Rd as firefighters from multiple stations battled the blaze and brought it under control.

No Injuries Reported

The restaurant was closed at the time and no injuries were reported, but the building was left gutted. According to 7NEWS.com.au, the restaurant operators only held a lease of the building and are not the owners.

Investigation Underway

Fire Cause Investigators and Hills Fleurieu detectives returned to the scene on Wednesday as they work to determine how the fire started.

Community Reaction

Locals described seeing flames shooting from the windows, with one resident posting that crews were “throwing everything at it, trucks from far and wide.” Several took to Facebook to express sympathy for the owners.

“Bloody heartbreaking. For the people, building history, owners and neighbours,” one post in a community group read. Others said the blaze was “pretty bad” and “the worst I’ve seen.”

Mount Barker District Council mayor David Leach said the loss would be felt across the community. “It’s a great local restaurant,” he said. “Once again it shows how volunteer firefighters step up to serve this community. The council will support the owners to get back on their feet.”

Tourist Destination Impact

Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills draws roughly over one million visitors a year, making it one of South Australia’s busiest tourist destinations.

Police are urging anyone who saw suspicious activity or who has CCTV or dashcam footage from the area to contact them.
