A groundbreaking graphite processing plant is set to be built in Townsville, Queensland, marking a significant step in breaking China's dominance over the global battery supply chain. The facility, developed by Australian company EcoGraf, will process graphite from its Epanko mine in Tanzania, producing high-purity spherical graphite for lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles and renewable energy storage.
Strategic Importance
The plant represents a strategic move to diversify supply chains away from China, which currently controls over 70% of the world's graphite processing. With the global demand for electric vehicles surging, the need for alternative sources of battery materials has become critical. The Townsville facility is expected to produce 10,000 tonnes of spherical graphite annually, enough to supply batteries for approximately 200,000 electric vehicles.

The project is projected to create around 100 direct jobs during construction and 50 permanent positions once operational.
