An elderly man has tragically died after being struck by a car while walking in southern New South Wales.
Incident details
Emergency services were dispatched to Staff Street, near Crown Street, in Wollongong, following reports that a pedestrian had been hit by a vehicle. The man, believed to be in his 80s, received immediate medical attention at the scene for head injuries before being transported to Wollongong Hospital in critical condition.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, he later succumbed to his injuries and died in hospital.
Driver and investigation
The driver of the vehicle, a 62-year-old man, was also taken to the same hospital for mandatory testing as part of standard procedure.
A crime scene has been established, and police are conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities are working to formally identify the deceased, who has not yet been named.
Appeal for public assistance
Police are appealing to the public for help in identifying the man. He is described as being of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern appearance and was wearing a red and black flannelette shirt and black shoes at the time of the incident.
