Newcastle Knights head coach Justin Holbrook has opened up about the emotional challenge of facing his former club, the Gold Coast Titans, in this weekend's NRL showdown. Speaking exclusively to the Newcastle Herald, Holbrook reflected on his time with the Titans and the unique dynamics of coaching against a team he once led.
Holbrook's Return to the Gold Coast
Holbrook, who took the reins at the Knights at the start of the 2024 season, spent three years as head coach of the Titans from 2020 to 2023. During his tenure, he guided the club through a rebuilding phase, earning respect from players and fans alike. Now, as he prepares to face his old side, the 47-year-old admits it will be a special occasion.
"It's always a bit different when you come up against a team you've been heavily involved with," Holbrook said. "I have a lot of good memories from my time there, and I still keep in touch with many of the players and staff. But once the whistle blows, it's all about the Knights."
Emotional Preparation
The Knights' mentor emphasized the importance of maintaining focus despite the emotional undercurrents. "You have to separate the personal from the professional," he explained. "The boys know what's at stake, and we've prepared well this week." Newcastle currently sits in the top eight, while the Titans are struggling near the bottom of the ladder, adding extra significance to the contest.
Holbrook also praised the current Titans squad, noting their resilience under new coach Des Hasler. "They've had some tough results, but they're a proud group. We can't afford to take them lightly," he warned.

The Knights are aiming for their third consecutive win, while the Titans seek to break a four-game losing streak. Holbrook remains confident in his team's preparation. "We've had a solid week on the training paddock. The energy is good, and we're ready to go."
As the clock ticks down to kick-off, all eyes will be on the coaching box, where Holbrook will look to outmaneuver his former club. For the Knights faithful, the hope is that their new leader can deliver another victory—and perhaps a step closer to finals football.
