Queensland's State of Origin aspirations have suffered a significant setback after star halfback Tom Dearden was ruled out for up to two months with an ankle injury. The reigning Wally Lewis Medallist sustained a syndesmosis injury during North Queensland's defeat to Parramatta on Friday night, with medical experts estimating a recovery period of between six and eight weeks.
This unfortunate development means Dearden will be unavailable for the first two matches of the State of Origin series, leaving Queensland selectors scrambling for a replacement. Among the potential candidates to fill the number seven jersey for the series opener in Sydney on May 27 are Sam Walker and Ezra Mam, though neither has any experience at the Origin level, adding an element of uncertainty to the Maroons' campaign.
Dearden played a pivotal role in Queensland's come-from-behind 2-1 series victory last year, having taken over the halfback duties from Daly Cherry-Evans for game two. His absence will be keenly felt as the Maroons look to defend their title.
