West Coast Eagles Reportedly Interested in Gold Coast Forward Jed Walter

Exclusive reports from The West Australian indicate that the West Coast Eagles are believed to be one of several clubs showing interest in out-of-contract Gold Coast Suns forward Jed Walter, who has strong connections to Western Australia.

Monitoring Walter's Contract Situation

According to sources, the Eagles, along with numerous Victorian clubs, are closely monitoring Walter's situation at the powerhouse Suns as he struggles to secure a regular spot in their best lineup. Walter has not re-signed beyond his initial draft contract, which expires at the end of this season. He was recruited through the Suns' academy with pick No. 3 in the 2023 draft.

The 20-year-old forward recently kicked four goals in a practice game against his junior club, Palm Beach Currumbin, which served as a curtain-raiser to the round one clash between Gold Coast and West Coast. However, Walter missed the Opening Round win over Geelong due to a suspension for misconduct in a pre-season loss to Brisbane last month. He was then overlooked for the match against West Coast and has not played since round 19 of the previous season.

Walter's Performance and Background

In his first two seasons at Gold Coast, Walter has kicked 29 goals in 30 games but was not part of the team during their inaugural finals campaign. The power forward grew up as an Eagles fan, living in South Perth until he was eight years old when his family moved to the east coast.

In a previous interview with The West Australian before being drafted, Walter expressed his lifelong support for West Coast, stating, "I have always loved West Coast. I have been a hardcore West Coast fan growing up." He added that his family's allegiance to the Eagles influenced his fandom, and he modeled his game on players like Charlie Curnow, Nic Naitanui, and Josh Kennedy.

Coaching and Team Dynamics

When asked about potential interest in Walter earlier this month, Eagles coach Andrew McQualter commented on the team's strategy, saying, "The decisions we're going to have to make going forward are going to be trade, free agency — all those things — and draft capital. We'll put a lot of work into that and you have to weigh up how many young players you keep taking in the draft versus acquisitions and trade and free agency. We will use every avenue we can to get the best players we can."

Meanwhile, Gold Coast faces several significant contract decisions with their forwards, including spearhead Ben King, who has yet to re-sign and is linked to a potential move back to Victoria. Additionally, former Western Bulldogs forward Jamarra Ugle-Hagan is on a one-year deal after his high-profile move north.

West Coast's Forward Line Rebuild

The Eagles are currently rebuilding their forward line around All-Australian Jake Waterman, following co-captain Oscar Allen's move to Brisbane as a free agent last year. In a recent 59-point defeat to the Suns, second-year Eagle Jobe Shanahan and fellow tall Archer Reid each kicked a goal, highlighting the team's ongoing adjustments and development efforts.
