Melbourne Demons' Home Base Plans Descend Into Uncertainty
The Melbourne Demons' quest to establish a permanent, consolidated home base has encountered significant complications, with their proposed temporary relocation to Waverley Park now described as "on the rocks" according to recent reports. The Australian Football League club had been planning to move to the recently vacated Waverley Park facility while pursuing their long-term ambition of constructing a new base at Caulfield Racecourse.
Waverley Park Move Stalls Over Caulfield Uncertainty
7NEWS chief AFL reporter Mitch Cleary revealed that Melbourne are now reluctant to commit to a temporary shift to Waverley Park unless they can first secure approval for their Caulfield Racecourse development plans. This hesitation has effectively stalled negotiations that had been ongoing for some time.
"Many thought the Melbourne footy club was going to move in to Waverley," Cleary stated during an appearance on Channel 7's The Agenda Setters program. "For a long time they've wanted to have their entire club under the one roof. Those negotiations have now stalled because Melbourne doesn't want to commit to Waverley until Caulfield has ticked off."
Caulfield Racecourse Plans Face Major Obstacles
The proposed Caulfield Racecourse development presents its own substantial challenges. The football club wants to build in the middle of the site, which would require construction of a tunnel and necessitate the Melbourne Racing Club suspending racing activities at the venue for approximately twelve months during the build phase.
Cleary emphasized the complexity of the situation, noting that "Caulfield is a long way from happening if it ever happens at all." The reporter added further context about the racing industry's current circumstances: "Moonee Valley's shut down for a while, too, so if they move to Caulfield, they'll need to shut the races down there for a while. It's a whole mess."
AFL Turns Attention to Richmond Tigers
With Melbourne's Waverley Park move in limbo, the AFL—who purchased Waverley from Hawthorn and now serve as landlords—have initiated discussions with the Richmond Football Club. The Tigers require a temporary home base for nine to ten months while their Punt Road Oval undergoes major redevelopment as part of their new Punt Road development project.
"So right now the AFL has picked up negotiations with Richmond because the Tigers need a home base for nine or 10 months when Punt Road Oval gets reconfigured," Cleary explained.
Football Figures Express Confusion Over Demons' Strategy
The Agenda Setters host Craig Hutchison described Melbourne's home base situation as "a significant headache for this footy club" and questioned their reluctance to secure Waverley Park temporarily. "What a disaster ... Surely they should go and lock in at Waverley for a period of time," Hutchison remarked.
St Kilda champion Nick Riewoldt expressed similar confusion about Melbourne's reservations, suggesting that "if they went to Waverley, and Caulfield didn't happen, at least you'd have somewhere where you could consolidate your entire football club in one venue." Riewoldt emphasized that "surely that's better than being across three different venues."
The Importance of a Consolidated Home Base
Collingwood captain Darcy Moore highlighted the significance of having all club facilities under one roof, particularly during the demanding AFL season. "You spend that much time, particularly in-season, at the footy club, it becomes like your second home, really," Moore explained. "So having it as a place that feels welcoming and feels like somewhere that feels at least like home, even if it's only temporary, definitely has an effect."
Cleary clarified Melbourne's perspective on the Waverley Park option, noting that the Demons "did not want to be stuck at Waverley for five, six, or seven years if Caulfield never gets off the ground." The club wants their Caulfield plans confirmed before committing to any temporary relocation.
Current Status and Alternative Options
With both Waverley Park and Caulfield Racecourse options facing uncertainty, Melbourne appears likely to remain at AAMI Park in the short term. Meanwhile, Richmond is exploring multiple temporary home base possibilities including Waverley Park and potentially Gosch's Paddock while their Punt Road Oval redevelopment proceeds.
