A 20-year-old man accused of attacking former West Australian Labor strategist Tim Picton has now been charged over a separate alleged assault that occurred just two days earlier.
Christmas Morning Allegation in Perth Hills
Brodie Jake Dewar, 20, from Lesmurdie, is alleged to have struck a man outside the Kalamunda Hotel in the Perth Hills in the early hours of Christmas morning. He was arrested on Thursday and charged with acts or omissions causing bodily harm or danger.
The Armadale Magistrates Court heard on Friday that Dewar was walking with a stranger in a car park near the hotel when he allegedly punched the man in the jaw without warning. The alleged victim, a 40-year-old man, fell backwards onto the road and was reportedly unconscious for four minutes.
Snapchat Video and Injuries Detailed in Court
Following the alleged attack, Dewar is accused of filming a video on Snapchat. In the video, he is alleged to have said, “Don’t hit on my younger sister next time, brother, keep snoring.”
Bystanders assisted the man from the ground. He suffered a sore mouth and lip, and experienced some memory loss as a result of the incident.
Connection to Serious Northbridge Assault
This alleged assault happened two days before Dewar is accused of a separate, serious assault on former Labor strategist Tim Picton, 36, in Northbridge on December 27. Picton, a father, remains in a critical condition at Royal Perth Hospital.
CCTV footage of both alleged attacks, along with the Snapchat video, was played in court on Friday while the accused's family watched.
Dewar had been out on bail since being charged over the Picton assault, but that bail was revoked on Friday. Police strongly opposed his release, and the magistrate agreed, describing what he saw as “unprovoked” and stating he believed Dewar posed an “inherent risk to the community.”
