Rock Fisherman Dies After Wave Sweeps Him Into Ocean

A rock fisherman has tragically lost his life after being swept into the ocean by a wave at a notorious fishing spot on the Central Coast of New South Wales.

Incident Details

The 41-year-old man was knocked from the rocks at Frazer Park, a well-known fishing location, around 1:20 pm on Saturday. Despite wearing a flotation device tied around his torso, he was not wearing a lifejacket, according to reports from The Age.

NSW Police confirmed that the man's body was later recovered from the water by a rescue team aboard a Westpac Helicopter during a multi-agency rescue operation. The man had been fishing with friends at Snapper Point when he was swept off a lower rock platform while his companions fished from a higher point.

Rescue Efforts

Surf Life Saving NSW has previously described Snapper Point as a "notorious rock fishing black-spot." Witnesses reported that the man clung to an Esky for approximately 15 minutes before letting go. One of his friends jumped into the water in an attempt to save him but was unsuccessful.

The friend also required rescuing and was picked up uninjured by a passing vessel. He was taken to Swansea RSL Club for assessment.

Ongoing Investigation

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and a report will be prepared for the coroner. Authorities urge all rock fishermen to wear appropriate safety gear, including lifejackets, and to be aware of hazardous conditions.
