Wollongong Court Trial Begins with Serious Kidnapping and Firearm Allegations
Jury selection has officially commenced a significant trial at Wollongong District Court, where a man stands accused of holding two women at gunpoint in a series of alarming incidents. The defendant, who appeared in court dressed entirely in black with slicked-back hair and a thick beard, entered pleas of not guilty to multiple charges on February 9.

The man faces a comprehensive list of charges, including kidnapping, taking a person with intent to commit a serious crime, possession of a pistol, and two counts of using a weapon to commit an indictable offence. These allegations stem from events said to have occurred on January 15, 2022, in the Illawarra region.
During the Crown's opening address, the prosecutor outlined a disturbing sequence of events. According to the allegations, the man met two women at Lake Heights and, in what was described as a "menacing, threatening manner", demanded they drive him to an address in Kiama Downs. It was at this point that the man allegedly told one of the women she was "going to be killed" that very day.
Alleged Firearm Incident and Physical Assault
Once inside the Kiama Downs residence, the man is accused of discharging a pistol at a lounge, with the bullet landing dangerously close to where one of the women was seated. Police later discovered the bullet lodged in the floorboards, complete with identifiable entry and exit points on the furniture.
The court heard that when the second woman responded to screams from the other room, she was allegedly confronted by the man pointing the loaded pistol directly at her. After reportedly calming down and instructing the woman to leave his sight, the man is then accused of "stomping" on the hand of one of the women as she attempted to retrieve her mobile phone from the floor.
This alleged assault resulted in one of the women requiring medical treatment at Wollongong Hospital following the incident.
Defence Calls for Deliberate Consideration
The defence barrister made a pointed appeal to the newly empanelled jury, urging them to "hold off on jumping to conclusions" until all evidence has been properly presented and examined. The defence specifically highlighted the importance of dates throughout the proceedings, suggesting chronological details would prove crucial to the case.
"One thing I want you to focus on is dates, those are going to be very important," the defence barrister told the jury panel.
