Success rarely follows a perfectly straight line. For many young entrepreneurs, the path to building a thriving business is paved with significant personal hurdles, mental health challenges, and the need to completely rewrite their own story. This is profoundly true for Aliarna Dixon, a 17-year-old Dunghutti woman from Kempsey, New South Wales. By transforming her lifelong passion for cosmetics and self-care into a rapidly growing home-based business, Aliarna is proving that your past does not have to dictate your future.
Currently completing her Certificate III in Beauty Services (SHB30121) at TAFE NSW Kempsey, Aliarna has already successfully launched her own brand, Arna's Lash & Luxe. Through sheer determination, natural talent, and the power of local word-of-mouth recommendations, she is steadily building a loyal client base and establishing herself as a rising star in the regional beauty industry.
The spark: Turning passion into a pathway
For Aliarna, the world of beauty has always been much more than just applying makeup or shaping brows; it has been a lifelong sanctuary and a source of deep personal inspiration. From a young age, she possessed a natural affinity for the industry, an interest that only intensified as she grew older and began looking for a definitive career path.
However, her drive to succeed was fueled by more than just an interest in cosmetics. It was deeply rooted in her desire to create a better life for herself and rise above her circumstances.
“Since I was younger, I’ve always had a passion for beauty. It’s grown stronger over time and made me want to start my own business—especially because I come from the toughest part of Kempsey,” Aliarna explains. “I wanted to get out of there and build something for myself.”
Operating a small business requires immense grit, an attribute Aliarna developed through navigating intense personal struggles. Taking the bold leap into entrepreneurship at just 17 years old demonstrates a remarkable level of maturity, showcasing her fierce commitment to taking control of her economic future.
Navigating hardship and finding a fresh start
The journey to launching Arna's Lash & Luxe was far from easy. Like many young people, Aliarna's high school years were fraught with intense difficulties. Facing significant emotional and environmental challenges, including navigating severe bullying, schoolyard conflicts, and battling with her own mental health, she found herself disconnected from the traditional high school education system. She ultimately faced expulsion, a moment that could have easily derailed her future.
Instead, Aliarna sought out a completely fresh start. She enrolled at TAFE NSW Kempsey, a decision that provided her with the safe, supportive, and constructive environment she desperately needed to thrive.
“When I was in school, I went through a lot—bullying, fights—but at TAFE, it's peaceful,” Aliarna shares, reflecting on the stark contrast between the two educational environments. “The support systems are amazing. My teacher Nikki has been the best—I honestly wouldn't be where I am without her.”
This shift from a highly stressful environment to a specialised, adult-learning setting allowed Aliarna to finally focus her energy on her natural talents. Surrounded by industry professionals and like-minded peers, she was able to rebuild her confidence and channel her resilience into mastering a tangible, highly sought-after trade.
Arna's Lash & Luxe: A hub of connection and confidence
Today, Arna's Lash & Luxe is officially open for business. Operating directly out of her home in Kempsey, Aliarna focuses on specialised, high-quality beauty services. Unwilling to settle for the status quo, she is constantly looking for ways to expand her service menu and stay ahead of modern beauty trends. On top of her full-time TAFE NSW studies, she is simultaneously completing specialised online courses in advanced brow lamination and professional lash extensions to ensure her clients receive the best possible results.
While the technical application of lashes and beauty treatments requires intense focus and precision, Aliarna notes that the most rewarding aspect of her business is the profound human connection it fosters. In the beauty industry, the treatment chair often doubles as a safe space for clients to decompress and share their lives.
“I love chatting with clients one-on-one,” she says. “It's such a real connection—we both open up and leave feeling better.” By helping local women feel beautiful and confident in their own skin, Aliarna is providing a service that boosts the mental well-being of her community while simultaneously healing herself.
The power of vocational training in regional communities
Aliarna's incredible transformation from a struggling high school student to a confident business owner perfectly highlights the critical importance of accessible vocational education, particularly in regional areas like the Mid North Coast. TAFE NSW Teacher of Beauty and Nails, Nikkie Freeburn, notes that practical, hands-on training is a vital launchpad for young entrepreneurs.
“It's great to see students like Aliarna following their dreams and setting themselves up for success,” says Nikkie. “There are so many job opportunities in the beauty services industry, and our highly practical courses are designed to give students in-depth knowledge of a range of treatments.”
Beyond just learning how to apply a lash extension or safely shape an eyebrow, vocational education equips students with the holistic skills required to survive in the business world. “They also gain customer service skills and industry know-how, so they can build their own client base and even launch their own business,” Nikkie adds.
Looking to the future: expansion and industry recognition
With her Certificate III nearing completion, Aliarna shows absolutely no signs of slowing down. Her immediate future is incredibly bright, with her sights already set on enrolling in the Diploma of Beauty Therapy. This advanced qualification will allow her to master complex dermal therapies, spa treatments, and advanced salon management, giving Arna's Lash & Luxe the foundation it needs to scale into a larger commercial enterprise in the future.
Her remarkable turnaround and dedication to her craft have not gone unnoticed by the broader educational community. Aliarna was recently nominated for a highly prestigious TAFE NSW Gili Award, an honor that specifically celebrates and recognises the outstanding educational achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students across the state.
Looking back at the road she has traveled, Aliarna recognises the magnitude of what she has accomplished at such a young age. “It took me a long time to get where I am today. Everyone who knows me knows I've been through hell and back,” she reflects. “But now I'm proud of myself—I've built something I love, and I'm just getting started.”
For the Kempsey community, Aliarna Dixon is a powerful reminder that with the right support system, a clear passion, and an unbreakable spirit, the future is entirely what you make of it.
