Qantas has introduced its newest aircraft, the Airbus A321XLR, on the airline’s longest domestic route between Perth and Brisbane. The aircraft, named Murray River (registration VH-OGE), began service on Monday, May 4.
Next-Generation Narrow-Body Aircraft
The A321XLR is a next-generation narrow-body aircraft with an 8,700-kilometre range, capable of flying up to 11 hours non-stop. This is twice the range of standard single-aisle planes, thanks to an innovative Rear Centre Tank built into the fuselage. The permanent fuel tank increases fuel capacity without sacrificing cargo space.
To support a maximum take-off weight of 101 tonnes, the A321XLR features modified inboard wing flaps for take-off and reinforced landing gear for landing.
Fleet Renewal Program
Qantas has ordered 48 A321XLR aircraft as part of its fleet renewal program. The first was delivered in June 2025, and they are progressively replacing the airline’s existing 737 domestic fleet. Almost 100,000 customers travelling between Sydney and Perth have already flown on a Qantas A321XLR since the aircraft entered service in September 2025.
The new aircraft offers improved fuel efficiency and passenger comfort, with both economy and business class cabins. Qantas continues to modernise its domestic fleet to enhance the travel experience and reduce emissions.
