Uber Australia Adds Fuel Surcharge as Oil Prices Surge

Uber Australia Introduces Temporary Fuel Surcharge to Support Drivers

Australians using Uber will soon face increased fares as the rideshare company implements a temporary fuel surcharge in response to surging global oil prices. Starting from April 15, passengers travelling in petrol, diesel, or hybrid vehicles will be charged an additional 5 cents per kilometre. This fee is designed to go directly to drivers, helping them manage the escalating costs of fuel. Notably, trips in electric vehicles will not be affected by this new charge, reflecting a focus on traditional fuel-dependent transport.

Short-Term Measure Amid Volatile Fuel Markets

Emma Foley, the managing director of Uber Australia, explained that this surcharge is a short-term initiative aimed at supporting drivers during a period of high volatility in fuel markets. She emphasised that this measure builds upon a national fare update introduced in March, which already increased driver earnings across the country. The surcharge is set to remain in effect until June 8, with Uber closely monitoring fuel prices to determine whether an extension is necessary beyond this date.

Industry Context and Competitive Responses

This move follows a similar action by competitor DiDi, which introduced its own 5-cent-per-kilometre fuel surcharge earlier in the year. The rising fuel prices have placed significant financial strain on full-time rideshare drivers, as highlighted by Michael Kaine, the national secretary of the Transport Workers' Union. He noted that soaring costs are putting drivers under pressure and mentioned an ongoing application in the Fair Work Commission to improve standards across the rideshare industry. Kaine expressed a commitment to working with Uber and other platforms to establish fair pay and conditions for rideshare workers as quickly as possible.
