Ultra-runner Fran Hurndall is set to attempt a world record by running from Perth to Sydney in just 34 days, starting May 1. She plans to cover nearly 3,800 kilometres, averaging 110 kilometres per day — roughly three marathons daily.
Hurndall is undertaking the challenge to raise money and awareness for domestic violence, inspired after a loved one revealed they were suffering from abuse. Her project, Reach Out Speak Up, aims to break the cycle of shame and encourage victims to speak out.
During the run, Hurndall will burn an estimated 7,000 calories per day and will need to eat every five to 10 kilometres. Her go-to snack is rice crackers with Nutella, jam and honey. She will change socks every 20 kilometres to avoid blisters and expects to go through more than 10 pairs of shoes.
Mental strength is key for Hurndall, who uses audiobooks and ABBA's 'Rock Me' to push through tough moments. She previously dribbled a soccer ball from the Gold Coast to Sydney last year to raise awareness for women's sports.
Hurndall hopes the media attention from her record attempt will spark conversations and help domestic violence victims come forward sooner. 'I'm just so fortunate that [the person in her life] was able to bravely come and talk about it,' she said.
