Tragic Multi-Vehicle Crash Claims Motorcyclist's Life on Notorious Queensland Mountain Road
A motorcyclist has tragically died following a severe multi-vehicle collision involving two cars and a motorbike on a notoriously dangerous mountain road in Queensland. The incident occurred on Tamborine Mountain Road in the Scenic Rim region at approximately 10:40 AM on Sunday, prompting a large-scale emergency response that included three rescue helicopters.
Details of the Collision and Emergency Response
Initial police investigations indicate that a white 2005 Subaru Liberty travelling southbound collided with a grey BMW motorcycle and a grey Nissan X-Trail travelling northbound. The impact resulted in catastrophic damage to all vehicles, with the motorcycle being crushed and both cars sustaining severe front-end damage.
The rider of the motorcycle, a 52-year-old man, suffered critical injuries in the crash. He was airlifted by rescue helicopter to Gold Coast University Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Multiple Casualties with Life-Threatening Injuries
In addition to the fatal casualty, six other individuals were injured in the collision, with five initially reported to be in life-threatening conditions. The injured parties include:
- Two male passengers from the Subaru, aged 22 and 25, who were airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
- The 25-year-old driver of the Subaru, who was transported to hospital with serious injuries.
- A 72-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman travelling in the Nissan X-Trail, who were taken to hospital with serious injuries.
- Three men in their 20s who were travelling in the Subaru, with one initially trapped and suffering facial injuries before being taken to hospital in stable condition.
According to Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) statements, one of the men suffered neck, chest, stomach, and possible spinal injuries, while another sustained chest, abdominal, and pelvic injuries. A QAS spokesperson also reported that a man in his 70s was trapped in a vehicle before being freed by emergency crews.
Road Closure and Investigation
Tamborine Mountain Road was closed in both directions for much of the day following the crash, causing significant disruption to traffic. The road, which features narrow lanes, sharp bends, and steep sections as it winds through the Gold Coast hinterland, was reopened late on Sunday afternoon.
