Emergency services responded to a severe house fire at a remote property in Queensland's Bundaberg region over the weekend, with two elderly residents now missing and authorities treating the incident as suspicious. The blaze erupted at Booyal Crossing Rd in Good Night Scrub, prompting multiple triple-0 calls around 9.15pm on Saturday.
Firefighters Battle Intense Blaze for Over Two Hours
Upon arrival, crews discovered the single-storey home fully engulfed in flames, leading to a rapid response from nine fire crews. Firefighters worked tirelessly for more than two hours, finally bringing the fire under control by approximately 11.30pm. The intensity of the blaze caused the roof to collapse, resulting in the complete destruction of the residence.
Queensland Police Chief Inspector Grant Marcus described the scene as dire, noting that by the time emergency teams arrived, there was "very little that people could do" due to the property being "completely engulfed in flames". The fire left the rural home in ruins, with little remaining of the structure after it was consumed by the inferno.
Missing Residents and Suspicious Circumstances
The two missing individuals are a 75-year-old man and a 79-year-old woman, who normally reside at the location. Chief Inspector Marcus stated, "They do normally reside at that location, but at this stage we cannot locate them." Authorities have not confirmed whether the pair were inside the home during the fire, with Marcus adding, "At this stage, until we know otherwise, we don't know if they were or were not."
Police have declared a crime scene and are treating the fire as suspicious as part of standard investigative procedures. Marcus explained, "As a result, we are treating the fire as suspicious because we don't know otherwise. This is normal practice under these circumstances." The missing residents are described as local individuals not previously known to authorities, with officers collaborating with family members as inquiries progress.

Investigators, including scientific and fire specialists, remain at the scene to determine the cause of the fire and locate the missing residents. Efforts are underway to make the structure safe for a full examination, with Marcus noting, "We're in the process of removing the roof to make the residence safe so investigators can get in."
