A massive crane has collapsed onto an apartment block in Dubbo, as wild winds ravaged the western region of New South Wales. The towering piece of machinery came crashing down, sending debris flying across the area and prompting immediate evacuations.
Witnesses at the scene expressed shock at the dramatic incident, with one person heard exclaiming, "Oh my God, I hope there's no one under there." Emergency services rushed to the location, and remarkably, no injuries were reported despite the scale of the collapse and the scattered debris.
Severe Weather Conditions Wreak Havoc
The wild winds that caused the crane to topple have been battering the region throughout the afternoon, creating dangerous conditions across western NSW. In addition to the crane collapse, a dust storm rolled through the area on Thursday afternoon, coating the regional landscape in a layer of red and turning the sky a dark orange.
Cobar was among the towns impacted, with thick dust observed moving through the region. Similar conditions may extend to surrounding areas as winds continue to intensify, according to NSW Incident Alerts.
Record Wind Gusts and Storm Warnings
Dubbo recorded a wind gust of 115km/h on Thursday afternoon, while Cobar experienced gusts of 96km/h. The Bureau of Meteorology issued warnings for a severe thunderstorm sweeping east across Sutherland, Richmond, and Liverpool. This storm was forecast to affect areas including Hornsby, Parramatta, Sydney, Mona Vale, Gosford, and Woy Woy, with predictions of damaging winds.
The combination of high winds and dust storms has heightened safety concerns, prompting authorities to urge residents to stay indoors and avoid travel in affected zones. Emergency services remain on high alert as they assess the damage and ensure public safety in the wake of this alarming event.
