Man 5x over limit with child in car loses gun licence after crash

A 41-year-old man who allegedly drove with a child in his car while more than five times over the legal alcohol limit has had his firearms and driver's licences seized following a crash in Kiama Downs.

Crash and arrest

Police were called to the intersection of Meehan and Riverside drives around 9am on Tuesday, April 28, after a car left the road and struck a traffic light. A tip-off from the public led officers to the scene.

Upon arrival, police were informed that the driver had fled the scene. “The driver allegedly left the scene, in his car, prior to police arrival,” a NSW Police spokesperson said.

Officers later stopped a vehicle on Riverside Drive in Kiama Downs, driven by a 41-year-old man. “Police will allege the man had a four-year-old male passenger in the back seat,” police said.

The man returned a positive roadside breath test and was arrested. A subsequent test at Lake Illawarra Police Station recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.281, more than five times the legal limit of 0.05.

Firearms seized

The man is a licensed firearms holder. During a search of a home in Kiama Downs, police seized four rifles, ammunition and three paintball guns. “His firearms licence and driver's licence were seized and suspended,” police confirmed.

He was issued a court attendance notice for high-range drink-driving and is scheduled to appear in Kiama Local Court on Monday, June 1.
