Two men have been arrested in Wollongong after an alleged attempt to deliver methylamphetamine via a drone ended in a crash landing. The remote-piloted aircraft came down at a unit block on Corrimal Street late on Tuesday, April 28, leading to a police investigation that uncovered a sophisticated drug operation and a fortified home.
How the Drone Delivery Unravelled
Police received a tip-off around 11:45pm about two men acting suspiciously near a unit complex. Upon arrival, officers found a 43-year-old and a 24-year-old man allegedly hiding inside the building. The men claimed they were searching for a drone that had crashed within the complex.
A subsequent search revealed a damaged drone carrying a dog waste bag containing 66 grams of methylamphetamine. Both men were taken into custody, and a broader investigation was launched.
Fortified Home and Additional Seizures
The following day, police executed a search warrant at a home on Cliff Road in Wollongong. There, they discovered that the front door had been reinforced with metal and multiple deadbolts, seemingly to secure the premises. Officers also seized a baton, an electronic stun device, 42 grams of methamphetamine, and $4,350 in cash.
Police allege the men were using the drone to deliver drugs in the area when it malfunctioned and crashed.
Charges and Court Appearance
The two men have been charged with supplying prohibited drugs, entering enclosed land without a lawful excuse, and possessing prohibited drugs. They appeared in bail court on Wednesday, April 29, where they were refused bail. They are scheduled to appear at Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday, May 12.
Police Statement
“Police will allege in court the men were using the drone to deliver drugs in the area when it crashed,” a NSW Police spokesperson said. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not ruled out further charges.
The incident highlights the evolving methods used by drug dealers to evade detection, including the use of unmanned aerial vehicles for illicit deliveries. Police have urged the public to report any suspicious activity involving drones or drug operations.
