An Australian mother has been widely praised online for standing up for her teenage daughter after a man made an inappropriate comment about her body at a cafe. The incident occurred at Routley's Bakery in the Victorian town of Torquay, where the mother and daughter were buying lunch. A male customer told the young girl that her food order would go straight to her hips.
Mother confronts the man
In a video shared on social media, the mother filmed the man while confronting him about his comment. She asked, "Is there a problem?" The man replied, "No." She then said, "So you're not going to make any more comments about young girls' bodies while they're in a shop buying food?" The mother asked him to repeat what he had said to her daughter. The man admitted to making the comment but did not apologize, stating, "I said, it'll go straight to your hips... I wasn't talking about her body."
The man then became defensive, accusing the mother of lacking a sense of humor. When asked if he had daughters, he said no. The mother responded, "I'm glad that you don't, because it's actually a revolting comment to make to a young girl." The man retorted, "I think you're overprotective," and offered a half-hearted apology. The mother firmly replied, "You should be sorry and learn that when you're out in public and someone's buying food, you need not make a comment about young people's bodies. You're a pig of a man who saw a young girl wearing workout gear and decided to make a comment about food that she was buying."
Public support and viral reaction
The video has amassed over 17,800 likes and nearly 3,000 comments, with many celebrities showing support. Radio and TV star Myf Warhurst commented, "This is a public service. Thank you!" Dr. Kate Adams, owner of Bondi Vet and star of Real Housewives of Sydney, wrote, "If you are overreacting... the whole internet is about to be overreacting. Good on you." Another user said, "Speak even if your voice shakes, thank you Mama Bear." A father commented, "As a male and a father to a daughter this guy makes my blood boil, well done for speaking up."
Mother's statement
The mother later issued a statement, saying she is "genuinely overwhelmed" by the "support, kindness, and messages of encouragement" she and her daughter have received. She reassured followers that her daughter is doing fine, surrounded by love and protection, and is a strong young woman. She concluded, "And let me be very clear — I will always protect her, loudly and unapologetically, from anyone who even thinks about crossing that line."
