Wollongong's Skyline Transforms as Crane Count Reaches Unprecedented Levels
The Wollongong skyline is undergoing a dramatic transformation, with the number of construction cranes reaching a new peak that signals robust growth across the Illawarra region. According to the latest data from quantity surveyor Rider Levett Bucknall, the area is experiencing its strongest construction activity in years.
Record Crane Numbers Reflect Construction Surge
The Rider Levett Bucknall Crane Index, which tracks construction activity in major Australian cities, has recorded 20 cranes operating across Wollongong and Shellharbour in the third quarter of 2025. This represents a significant increase of five cranes since the beginning of the year and marks the region's highest crane count since it was first included in the index in early 2019.
"Cranes in the sky have become a key indicator of urban development and economic vitality," the report notes, highlighting how this metric provides valuable insight into construction trends and regional growth patterns.
Major Projects Driving the Construction Boom
Several significant developments are contributing to this construction surge. Among the new additions to Wollongong's skyline is the crane for Level 33's Easterly Apartments, located on the former Chicko's site in Crown Street. This 14-storey residential complex has already seen apartments sold off the plan, attracting buyers from outside the local area.
Another prominent project is Blaq Projects' Brooklyn Square development in Flinders Street, adjacent to Levers Art Supplies. Originally approved for two nine-storey towers, the developer successfully sought approval for an additional three storeys on each tower after taking advantage of the state government's height bonus for providing affordable housing. The Land and Environment Court approved this modification early last year.
Healthcare Infrastructure Expansion
Further south, the Crane Index has counted two substantial cranes at the Shellharbour Hospital development site, with one reaching an impressive 15 storeys in height. This project forms part of the comprehensive $780 million Shellharbour Hospital and Integrated Services Project, which includes significant infrastructure upgrades at Port Kembla, Wollongong, and Bulli hospitals.
The concentration of construction activity across both residential and healthcare sectors demonstrates the diverse nature of Wollongong's current development phase, with multiple projects simultaneously reshaping the urban landscape and supporting community needs.
What This Means for the Illawarra Region
The unprecedented crane count reflects more than just construction activity—it signals broader economic growth, increased employment opportunities in the building sector, and evolving urban infrastructure. As these projects progress toward completion, they will substantially alter Wollongong's cityscape while providing new housing options and enhanced healthcare facilities for residents.
This construction boom positions Wollongong as one of Australia's most active regional development hubs, with the crane count serving as a visible testament to the area's ongoing transformation and economic momentum.
