Carter Heavy Haulage Finalist for Hunter Safety Awards

Carter Heavy Haulage & Transport has been named a finalist in three categories at the 2026 Hunter Safety Awards, recognising its unwavering commitment to workplace safety. For the Carter family, safety is not just a policy but a daily practice embedded in every operation.

A Culture of Safety

Operating in heavy haulage, oversize loads, and dangerous goods transport, the company faces high-risk environments where there is no room for error. Owners Josh and Leonnie Carter have built the business around a proactive safety mindset. 'We work in an industry where risks are real,' Leonnie said. 'Safety isn't something we talk about; it's embedded in everything we do, every single day.'

The company holds NHVR accreditations in Mass, Maintenance, and Fatigue Management, along with MainRoads WA accreditation. These are supported by ongoing auditing, training, and a strong focus on managing fatigue and operational risk. However, the Carters emphasise that systems alone are not enough. 'Systems don't keep people safe; people do,' Josh said. 'It comes down to your team, how they think, and how they look after each other on the road.'

Team Leadership

Safety Compliance Officer Kimlarney Park plays a key role in maintaining and strengthening the company's systems, ensuring they are understood and applied in real-world conditions. Transport Coordinator Jemma Walters represents the next generation of safety leadership, bringing operational understanding and a commitment to continuous improvement. 'Everyone has an important role to play,' Leonnie added. 'Safety is a shared responsibility, regardless of your position.'

Recognition and Future Goals

Carter Heavy Haulage is a finalist in the Best WHS, WHS Rising Star, and Young WHS Leader categories. The recognition reflects the high standards the team upholds daily. As the Hunter Safety Awards celebrate their 10th year, the Carters believe the industry is moving in the right direction but stress the need to attract the right people and lift standards further. 'There's a big difference between doing the minimum and doing things properly,' Leonnie said. 'We've always believed in doing it properly for our team, their families, our clients, and the community.'

At its core, the company's focus remains simple: ensuring everyone gets home safely. 'That's something we're proud of,' Josh concluded.
