Police in Newcastle are urging the public to exercise caution following reports of a driver impersonating a rideshare service in the early hours of the weekend.
Incident Outside Hamilton Hotel
The incident under investigation occurred at approximately 2.40am on Sunday, January 18. Authorities state the driver was last seen in a white Toyota Camry outside a hotel on Denison Street in Hamilton.
Officers from the Newcastle City Police District have confirmed they are actively seeking to speak with the driver of that vehicle, who may be able to assist with their inquiries.
Police Issue Public Safety Warning
In response to the report, New South Wales Police have issued a clear warning to the community. A spokesperson emphasised the importance of vigilance when using rideshare platforms.
"Police would also like to urge the public to be vigilant when using rideshare apps and to confirm the vehicle they are entering is the correct vehicle," the spokesperson said.
This simple verification step is considered a crucial safety measure to prevent individuals from inadvertently entering a vehicle with an unauthorised driver.
