Free native trees and tube stock will soon be available for Canning residents to collect and plant in their gardens. The annual Grow For It event returns this May across the city, allowing locals to collect one free tree and tube stock per household while stocks last.
Nine native species will be available on the day, including slender banksia, red flowering gum, silver princess, pincushion hakea, bottlebrush and a range of mallees.
Mayor Patrick Hall said the trees are all suited to local growing conditions, and will help residents contribute to a greener city.
“Every tree planted in a Canning garden or verge helps shade our streets, support local wildlife and make our neighbourhoods more liveable,” he said. “We encourage residents to come along early, choose a species that suits their space and take home a tree that will benefit their property and the broader community for years to come.”
Grow For It aims to improve the urban forest in Canning by increasing tree canopy on private properties, creating a cooler and more resilient city. Native trees also benefit WA wildlife by creating urban corridors for animals such as black cockatoos, allowing them to access food and shelter.
The trees will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis. No registration is required, but residents should bring proof of address when they collect their plants. The event will be held on Sunday, May 3, at the civic and administration centre from 8am to 12pm.
