An 84-year-old woman was found dead at a Sydney nursing home late Thursday night after a substance was allegedly administered to her. The body was discovered at Our Lady of Consolation in Rooty Hill around 11:35pm, prompting an immediate police response.
Arrest and Investigation
A 53-year-old woman, believed to be known to the elderly resident, was arrested at the scene. NSW Police Detective Superintendent Darrin Batchelor stated that police believe she allegedly administered a substance to the victim. "We don't know exactly what that substance is at the moment, or whether that contributed to her passing last night," Batchelor said.
The younger woman was found "distressed when police arrived," and a nine-year-old boy, another family member, was also present at the nursing home. The boy has since been placed in the care of family members.
Medical and Legal Context
The 53-year-old was taken to Mount Druitt Hospital for medical assessment. Batchelor noted she has no criminal history and is not believed to have any medical training. The elderly woman "did suffer from a number of medical conditions," he added.
Authorities are exploring possible motives, including whether the incident involved assisted dying. "It's really too early to determine what the motivation is at the moment, whether it was an assisted dying scenario, we really don't know," Batchelor said.
Next Steps
The manner of death will be determined by the Coroner through toxicology reports. Police have seized several items from the nursing home and are reviewing CCTV footage. Investigations are ongoing.
