A motorcyclist has died after crashing on the Monaro Highway south of Cooma, prompting road closures and lengthy detours during the Easter long weekend.
NSW Police report that the male rider, believed to be in his 40s, was traveling with a group of motorcyclists around 1:20pm on Friday when he crashed at Rock Flat, about 20 kilometers south of Cooma. He died before emergency services arrived.
Authorities believe no other vehicles or objects were involved in the incident. Police have appealed for anyone with dash-cam footage to come forward.
The Monaro Highway was closed in both directions between Nimmitabel and Tom Groggin Road, with detours via the Kings Highway, Princes Highway, and Snowy Mountains Highway adding up to five hours of travel time. Motorists were advised to avoid the area.
Police have established a crime scene at the crash site, which is expected to remain in place for a considerable time. This is the first road death reported to NSW Police during the Easter long weekend.
The crash location is near a section of the Monaro Highway previously flagged for safety upgrades. The first stage of works, including safety barriers and widened shoulders, has been completed, with further improvements planned.
