A devastating collision between two high-speed passenger trains in the United Kingdom has resulted in one fatality and numerous injuries. The incident occurred on Friday at approximately 5:15 PM local time on a railway line in Bedford, located about 90 minutes north of London, according to British Transport Police.
Casualties and Response
The East of England Ambulance Service reported that among the dozens injured, 11 individuals sustained “very serious injuries,” while 22 others were classified as “seriously injured.” Additionally, 56 people suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene or transported to hospitals as needed. A major incident was declared, prompting a large-scale emergency response involving over 20 ambulances, six air ambulances, and specialist Hazardous Area Response Teams.
Emergency services remained at the crash site to provide support and information to concerned family members of those involved. It is currently unclear whether the deceased was a passenger or a staff member.
Investigation Underway
British Transport Police Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Cundy stated, “We’re working at pace to establish exactly what’s happened and will provide further information as soon as we are able.” The two trains involved were an East Midlands Railway service from Corby to London St Pancras, which departed at 4:40 PM, and a train from Nottingham to London St Pancras, which left at 3:50 PM.
Witness Accounts and Hospital Warnings
Peter Knapp, a passenger in the front carriage of one of the trains, described the experience: “I felt like I’d been in a bomb explosion.” Local hospitals treating the injured have urged the public to avoid emergency departments unless for genuine medical emergencies, emphasizing the need to use NHS services appropriately.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his condolences and gratitude for the rapid emergency response via social media, stating, “Hugely concerning reports of a collision involving two passenger trains near Bedford. First and foremost, my thoughts are with the family of the person who has sadly lost their life, and with those who have been seriously injured. I am grateful to the emergency services for their swift response to this tragic incident.”
The BBC reported that the trains were the 4:40 PM from Corby to London St Pancras and the 3:50 PM from Nottingham to London St Pancras. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
