Port Stephens police have initiated a significant operation following the discovery of human remains at the Newcastle Golf Club in Fern Bay. Builders working on the site made the unsettling find on Friday afternoon, prompting an immediate police response.
Crime Scene Established at Vardon Road Location
Officers were called to the scene on Vardon Road at approximately 12:30pm on January 23 after receiving reports of discovered remains. Upon arrival, authorities declared a crime scene and secured multiple bone fragments of uncertain origin, according to an official statement from NSW Police.
Specialist forensic teams were summoned to the location as officers conducted an extensive search of the surrounding area for additional fragments and potential evidence that might shed light on the nature of the remains.

The Newcastle Golf Club has been undergoing substantial construction activity to accommodate a large-scale residential retirement development. Plans for this ambitious project were initially revealed in 2024.
The $108 million Fern Bay development will transform the National Trust-listed course's 16th, 17th, and 18th holes along Nelson Bay Road into a comprehensive seniors living complex. The project includes 125 apartments, 337 parking spaces, 35 villas, 12 duplexes, and a bowling green, according to previous Herald reporting.
Construction on the redesigned course layout commenced in September of last year. Club members recently viewed the newly developing fifth, seventh, 15th, and 16th holes as part of the project's ongoing timeline.
