Greg Marzhew produced a stunning performance for the Newcastle Knights, scoring five tries to equal the club's record in a dominant 58-18 win over the St George Illawarra Dragons at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday. The winger's five-try haul matched the previous club record set by Timana Tahu in 2005 and Akuila Uate in 2011.
Marzhew's Record-Equalling Feat
Marzhew crossed the line in the 12th, 24th, 35th, 48th, and 67th minutes to etch his name in Knights history. The 26-year-old's explosive pace and power proved too much for the Dragons' defence, as he consistently found space on the edge. His final try, a 70-metre intercept, capped off a memorable afternoon for the Knights faithful.
"It's a pretty special feeling," Marzhew said after the match. "I just wanted to get the ball and run hard. The boys gave me good opportunities, and I was able to finish them off. To equal the record of legends like Timana and Akuila is humbling."
Knights Dominate from Start to Finish
The Knights were in control from the opening whistle, racing to a 28-6 lead at halftime. The forwards laid the platform, with strong carries from the Saifiti brothers and Tyson Frizell. Halfback Jackson Hastings orchestrated the attack, providing quality ball to his outside backs.
Newcastle's defence was also impressive, limiting the Dragons to just three tries. The Knights' line speed and communication frustrated the Dragons, who struggled to build sustained pressure.
Key Performers
- Greg Marzhew: 5 tries, 10 tackle breaks, 3 line breaks
- Jackson Hastings: 2 try assists, 1 line break, 3 tackle breaks
- Daniel Saifiti: 150 running metres, 32 tackles
Dragons Disappoint
The Dragons, who entered the match on a two-game winning streak, were outclassed in all areas. Their defence was porous, particularly on the edges, and they struggled to contain the Knights' attacking raids. Coach Anthony Griffin expressed his disappointment post-match, citing poor discipline and missed tackles as key factors.
"We were second-best in every department today," Griffin said. "Our effort and execution weren't up to NRL standard. We need to go back to the drawing board and fix our defensive system."
Despite the heavy defeat, there were some positives for the Dragons, including a try-scoring double from winger Mikaele Ravalawa.
What's Next?
The Knights will look to build on this performance when they travel to face the Cronulla Sharks next Saturday. The Dragons, meanwhile, will aim to bounce back at home against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs on Sunday.
Marzhew's record-equalling effort has also sparked discussions about a potential State of Origin call-up, with the winger adding his name to a growing list of contenders for the NSW Blues' vacant wing spot.
