Art in Miniature Exhibition Finds Perfect Home in Australia's Tiniest Gallery
A new exhibition showcasing miniature art has opened in what might be the most fitting venue possible: the Gallery of Small Things in Watson, Canberra. The Art in Miniature show, which launched on Thursday, will run until March 16, featuring 51 stunning artworks by 17 talented artists, all measuring no more than 10cm by 10cm in size.
Celebrating Art and Friendship Over 25 Years
The Art in Miniature group, a Canberra-based collective, is marking an impressive 25 years of creating art and fostering friendships. Founded by Margaret Bice and Jan Vincent, who hosted the first meeting in a studio back in 2001, the group has grown into a vibrant community. "A year later, we had our inaugural exhibition at Belconnen Gallery in 2002," Margaret recalled. "This exhibition will celebrate our long-standing friendship group in the smallest gallery space ever."
Anne Masters, the director of the Gallery of Small Things, expressed her excitement about hosting the show. "AIM invited me to open two shows - one in Canberra and one in Cooma," she said. "I enjoyed meeting the members, seeing their works in two different spaces and locations and felt it would be remiss of me not to have them in Australia's tiniest gallery." The gallery itself is a cozy six-metre-by-six-metre space, nestled in the leafy suburb of Watson.
A Curated Collection of Miniature Masterpieces
To ensure a cohesive and visually appealing display, Anne challenged the artists to frame all their works in a uniform colour and size. She was "incredibly grateful" that every artist met this brief, resulting in a beautifully curated exhibition. The artworks on display span a wide range of subjects, including:
- Still life compositions
- Vibrant hot-air balloon scenes
- Detailed bird portraits
- Serene beach landscapes
This diversity highlights the creativity and skill of the miniature art community, proving that great art can come in small packages.
Visit the Exhibition
The Gallery of Small Things is located at 27 Wade Street in Watson. Visitors can explore the Art in Miniature exhibition from Thursdays to Mondays, between 11am and 5pm, until March 16. For those unable to attend in person, the exhibition catalogue is available online, offering a glimpse into the tiny treasures on display.
This event not only showcases the talent of local artists but also underscores the importance of community and friendship in the arts. As Canberra continues to support such initiatives, the Art in Miniature exhibition serves as a reminder that sometimes, the smallest spaces can hold the biggest stories.
