A powerful earthquake struck southern China early Monday, claiming at least two lives and causing widespread destruction in the city of Liuzhou, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The 5.2-magnitude tremor hit just before 12:30 a.m. local time, collapsing 13 buildings and forcing approximately 7,000 residents to evacuate to safety.
Casualties and Missing Persons
State media identified the deceased as a couple—a 53-year-old woman and a 63-year-old man. One individual remains missing, and four others were hospitalized, though their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Emergency Response
National and regional emergency response teams worked through the night to assess the damage and locate the missing person. Authorities reported that power, water, and gas supplies were unaffected and operating normally despite the quake's intensity.
Liuzhou, a city with a population of over four million, experienced significant structural damage, but emergency services have been deployed to ensure public safety and restore normalcy.
