Kevin Walters extends Kangaroos contract through 2028 World Cup
Walters signs Kangaroos extension until 2028

Kevin Walters, a legendary figure in the NRL, has been appointed as the head coach of the Australian Kangaroos for the upcoming Rugby League World Cup, following the signing of a two-year contract extension. The Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) secured Walters' services through June 2028, ensuring he will lead the national team in one of the sport's most prestigious roles.

Walters to Lead World Cup Campaign

Walters will oversee Australia's campaign at this year's Rugby League World Cup, as well as the Pacific Championships scheduled after the 2027 NRL season. The NRL is expected to announce additional international fixtures during the two years before his contract concludes, further solidifying the Kangaroos' calendar.

Potential Successor in the Wings

Walters' potential departure in 2028 could open the door for Penrith Panthers coach Ivan Cleary, who has expressed aspirations to coach at the representative level. Cleary is set to finish his tenure with the Panthers at the end of next year, making him a prime candidate for the Kangaroos role.

Walters' Tenure and Achievements

Walters' tenure as Kangaroos coach began with a comprehensive 3-0 Ashes series clean sweep over England last spring. His initial contract was set to expire in June this year, but the ARLC has now extended his term. He was originally appointed on a short-term basis after Mal Meninga stepped down to become the inaugural coach of the Perth-based NRL franchise.

The new deal reflects the ARLC's confidence in Walters, who previously coached the Brisbane Broncos to a narrow defeat in the 2023 NRL grand final and led Queensland to State of Origin series victories in 2016 and 2017.

Walters' Statement

“The experience I had with the team at the Ashes was a privilege and very rewarding,” Walters said. “Now to be able to continue into a home World Cup will be a huge honour. World Cups always provide the biggest challenges, and I’m looking forward to assembling a great, experienced staff and playing group to have a successful tournament.”

ARLC's Vote of Confidence

The ARLC was impressed by feedback from Kangaroos players following Walters' first matches in charge during the tour of England. ARLC chairman Peter V'landys praised Walters' performance, stating, “Kevin did an outstanding job and I’m very pleased to announce him as the Kangaroos coach for the most important tournament in many years.”

Magic Round Extension

The announcement coincided with V'landys confirming a new six-year deal to keep Magic Round in Brisbane until at least 2032, further boosting rugby league's presence in Queensland.
