The Perth Bears have made a significant move in building their squad for their historic entry into the NRL, securing the signature of promising Parramatta Eels outside back Sean Russell.
A Long-Term Commitment to Western Australia
The club announced it has signed the 23-year-old to a substantial four-year deal, which will see him join the franchise for their debut season in the competition in 2027. Russell will see out the upcoming 2026 season with the Parramatta Eels before making the move west.
Since his first-grade debut in 2021, Russell has established himself as a reliable performer, having played 61 matches for the Eels and crossing for an impressive 24 tries.
Meninga Hails "Outstanding Talent"
Perth Bears coach and rugby league legend Mal Meninga expressed his delight at securing Russell's services on a long-term contract. He highlighted the specific qualities that made the young gun a target for the new club.
"It’s another fantastic day for the Perth Bears with Sean committing to our club on a long-term deal," Meninga said. "Sean is an outstanding talent who possesses the characteristics I am looking for as we continue to build our inaugural roster. He is a proven try-scorer and a fantastic defender. I have no doubt he will be a very important piece in our roster for many years to come."
Joining a Growing Inaugural Squad
Russell becomes the seventh confirmed signing for the Bears as they meticulously assemble their playing group. He joins a list that already includes Toby Sexton, Iszac Fa’asuamaleaui, Harry Newman, Liam Henry, Emarly Bitugane, and Luke Smith.
Bears general manager of football David Sharpe emphasised that Russell's value extends beyond his on-field prowess. "Sean is another Perth Bears recruit who has his best footy ahead of him," Sharpe stated. "His talent on the field speaks for itself, but it is the qualities he has shown off the field that impress me the most. I’m delighted to welcome Sean to the Bears in what is another significant day in the history of our club."
For his part, Russell acknowledged the excitement surrounding the new venture but remained focused on his immediate duties. "There’s already a lot of excitement and anticipation about the Bears entering the NRL I am delighted to have the opportunity to be a part of it," Russell said. "My focus right now remains on the Eels and giving all that I have for 2026. They have supported me throughout my career and I am forever grateful."
The signing represents another major step forward for the Perth-based franchise as it lays the foundations for a competitive entry into the National Rugby League, bringing top-flight rugby league back to Western Australia.
