Christian Vieri, the legendary former Inter Milan and Italy striker, has urged young footballers to chase their dreams with relentless determination. The 52-year-old, who scored over 200 goals in Serie A and represented Italy at three World Cups, shared his advice during a visit to Perth as part of the Calcio Italiano event.
Vieri’s message to the next generation
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Vieri emphasised the importance of hard work and self-belief. “When I was a kid, I had a dream to play for Inter and the national team. I worked every day to make it happen. My message to young players is simple: chase your dreams, but be ready to sacrifice,” he said.
The former striker, who also played for Juventus, Atletico Madrid, and Monaco, recalled his own journey from a young boy kicking a ball in the streets of Bologna to becoming one of the most feared strikers in world football. “It wasn’t easy. There were tough times, injuries, and disappointments. But if you love the game enough, you find a way,” Vieri added.
Calcio Italiano in Perth
Vieri is in Western Australia as part of the Calcio Italiano initiative, which aims to promote Italian football culture and inspire local talent. The event includes coaching clinics, Q&A sessions, and exhibition matches. “Australian football is growing, and there is so much potential here. I want to share my experience and help these young players believe in themselves,” Vieri said.
The event has drawn hundreds of young footballers and fans, eager to learn from one of Italy’s greatest number nines. Local coach Marko Rudan praised Vieri’s involvement: “Having a legend like Christian here is huge for our community. His passion is infectious, and his advice is gold.”
- Vieri scored 49 goals in 49 appearances for Italy, a remarkable record.
- He won the Serie A top scorer award in 1998 with Atletico Madrid.
- Vieri’s 22 goals for Inter Milan in the 2002-03 season remain a club record for a single campaign.
Advice for aspiring professionals
When asked what young players should focus on, Vieri stressed the importance of fundamentals. “Technique, fitness, and mentality. You can have all the skill in the world, but without the right mindset, you won’t make it. And never stop learning. Watch the greats, study the game, and always give 100 percent,” he said.
He also warned against the distractions of modern football, such as social media and excessive gaming. “When I played, my focus was on training and recovery. Today, there are so many things that can take your attention away. Stay disciplined,” Vieri advised.
A legacy of passion
Vieri’s visit has reignited interest in Italian football among Australian fans. Many remember his iconic performances in the 1998 World Cup and his fierce rivalry with Brazilian legend Ronaldo. “Football is about emotion. I played with my heart, and that’s what I want to pass on,” he said.
The Calcio Italiano tour continues across Australia, with events planned in Sydney and Melbourne. For Vieri, it’s about giving back to the sport that gave him everything. “I’ve been blessed to play this beautiful game. If I can inspire even one kid to follow their dream, then I’ve done my job,” he concluded.
