NRL CEO Andrew Abdo Resigns, Peter V'landys to Step In
NRL CEO Andrew Abdo Quits, V'landys Interim Replacement

Andrew Abdo has stepped down from his role as chief executive of the National Rugby League (NRL) and is reportedly set to join Tennis Australia. The ARL Commission chair, Peter V'landys, will assume the position on an interim basis while the league searches for a permanent replacement for Abdo, who was appointed in April 2020.

V'landys to Take Dual Role

V'landys, who also serves as the CEO of Racing NSW, would become the first ARL Commission chair to hold both roles since John Grant did so in 2015 following the departure of David Smith. To manage the additional responsibilities, V'landys may need to take leave from his position at Racing NSW.

Abdo's Achievements at NRL

Abdo's resignation is a significant setback for the NRL, which has experienced record crowd numbers and television ratings during his tenure. Under his leadership, the league also launched expansion projects in Papua New Guinea and Perth. His departure comes at a critical time as the NRL is engaged in crucial negotiations for the next broadcast deal, expected to be the largest in the league's history. The current broadcasting agreement expires at the end of 2027.

Move to Tennis Australia

Although an official announcement regarding Abdo's future has not been made, the South African-born administrator appears poised to replace former Tennis Australia chief executive Craig Tiley. Coincidentally, Tiley also grew up in South Africa. Tiley officially announced his departure from Tennis Australia in February this year to become CEO of the US Tennis Association.

More details are expected to emerge in the coming days.
