Jock Madden's Golden Point Heroics Seal Tigers' NRL Triumph
In a heart-stopping Easter Monday showdown, Jock Madden's penalty goal in the fifth minute of extra time clinched a 22-20 golden-point victory for the Wests Tigers over the Parramatta Eels, delivering an early contender for the NRL's game of the season. The journeyman five-eighth, playing just his second NRL match since July 2024, stepped up from 15 metres out to ice the game, sending the Tigers into the top two on the ladder to conclude the weekend.
Tigers' Rise and Madden's Redemption
This Round 5 win marks only the second time in the past 12 seasons that the Tigers have finished a weekend in the top two, with the previous instance occurring after a round-one success back in 2017. Madden's moment of glory came after a nerve-wracking sequence where he initially thought he had squandered the Tigers' best chance at victory. Just three-and-a-half minutes into extra time, his field goal attempt was waved wide from point-blank range, but a reprieve arrived when Dylan Walker was penalized for being offside while pressuring the kicker. Seizing this second opportunity, Madden made no mistake, slotting the decisive penalty goal to secure the dramatic win.
The victory propels the Tigers to three wins from their first four games, a feat they haven't achieved since 2018, highlighting a promising start to their campaign. Earlier in the match, the Tigers had built an 18-10 lead, but the Eels mounted a fierce comeback inspired by an unlikely hero.
Twidle's Debut Sparks Eels' Fightback
Parramatta's resurgence was fueled by train-and-trial player Apa Twidle, who made his NRL debut as the 18th man in front of a record crowd of 29,397 fans at CommBank Stadium. The 21-year-old was granted a game-day exemption due to an Eels injury crisis that worsened when Bailey Simonsson dislocated his ankle, Sean Russell suffered a head knock, and Jonah Pezet went down with a hamstring issue against the Tigers. Simonsson's injury occurred after an awkward landing from a mid-air tackle by Luke Laulilii, who was sin-binned shortly after, giving the Tigers an 18-10 advantage with a second-half aerial try.
Activated as the 18th player, Twidle made an immediate impact, scoring with his first touch in the NRL. His stunning put-down on the right edge was initially ruled a no try but later awarded, and he followed it up with a simpler second try, running onto a Mitch Moses cut-out ball and sprinting to the line outside Hemasi Makasini. These efforts leveled the score at 18-18, setting the stage for a tense finale.
Late Drama and Crucial Penalties
In the final five minutes of regulation time, Mitch Moses tore down the right side on the fifth tackle but was stopped by Samuela Fainu. Referee Peter Gough initially ruled the set complete, but a captain's challenge from the Eels led to the bunker identifying a high tackle, allowing Moses to kick a penalty goal for a 20-18 lead. However, the Tigers quickly equalized on the following set when Sam Tuivaiti was penalized for a high tackle on Sione Fainu, with Madden slotting the first of his two crucial penalty goals to tie the game at 20-20, forcing it into golden point extra time.
This thrilling encounter not only showcased individual brilliance but also underscored the unpredictable nature of NRL rugby, with both teams displaying resilience and skill in a match that will be remembered for its dramatic twists and turns.
