American Superstar Sha'Carri Richardson Makes Stawell Gift History
American track and field icon Sha'Carri Richardson has etched her name into Australian sporting folklore by winning the 2026 Stawell Gift from scratch, with legendary commentator Bruce McAvaney declaring her the iconic meet's "most famous winner ever." The Olympic gold medallist and four-time World Champion produced a breathtaking performance to mow down Australian teenager Charlotte Nielsen in the final few metres of the prestigious 120m uphill grass race.
Dramatic Finish Creates Unforgettable Moment
In a finish that left spectators breathless, Richardson charged from behind to overtake Nielsen just before the line. "Sha'Carri's running her down, running her down, it's so close... she's got up! She's come from the clouds," McAvaney exclaimed during the Channel 7 broadcast. "It's one of the moments we will never forget. Stawell has its most famous winner ever. It's epic, iconic, the stuff of legends. I'm tingling. It's extraordinary, what she did."
The 26-year-old superstar stopped the clock at a blistering 13.15 seconds, a time that left commentators in awe. "Can you believe it? It's out of this world," McAvaney said of Richardson's remarkable performance. "Nielsen has run the race of her life, the teenager. She was clear. Richardson, Sha'Carri couldn't really win, could she? She couldn't get there... could she? Would she? You betcha."
Following in Historic Footsteps
Richardson becomes the second consecutive woman to win the Stawell Gift from scratch, following Australian athlete Bree Rizzo's victory in 2025. Before the race, McAvaney had noted that Richardson would "have to be perfect" to claim victory from the back marker position - and perfect she was, delivering a performance that will be remembered for generations.
Nerve-Wracking Semi-Final Drama
The victory came after Richardson nearly failed to qualify for the final during a tense semi-final race. The American superstar flew through the field to take the lead well before the finish line but then pulled up several metres short, failing to dip her chest at the line in what could have been a costly error.
"She actually stood straight up on the line, (but) I think she's through to the final," McAvaney observed during the semi-final drama. "It's absolutely drama at its highest. Only in the last centimetres do we think Sha'Carri's got there. She didn't dip at all; she actually almost leant back."
Former Australian athlete Tamsyn Lewis-Manou added her concern: "Oh my goodness, Sha'Carri, please make sure you run through the line in that final because you gave us a heart attack there! I'm glad she knew what she was doing, she was so fast out of the blocks, so fast through that middle phase - I mean, she's a world champion."
Richardson's historic victory at the Stawell Gift adds another remarkable chapter to her already illustrious career, cementing her status as one of track and field's most electrifying performers while creating an unforgettable moment in Australian sporting history.
