Athletics Wollongong is celebrating a historic milestone after three of its athletes were selected to represent Australia at the upcoming World Athletics Under-20 Championships. This marks the first time the club has had three representatives at the prestigious global event, highlighting the growing strength of athletics in the Illawarra region.
Historic Achievement for the Club
The trio includes sprinter Ethan Jones, middle-distance runner Mia Smith, and jumper Liam Brown, each of whom has excelled at national trials and meets this season. Club president Karen Lee expressed immense pride, stating that the achievement reflects the dedication of athletes, coaches, and the local community.
Athletes' Journeys
Ethan Jones, 18, qualified for the 100m and 200m sprints after breaking the club record in both events earlier this year. Mia Smith, 19, will compete in the 800m and 1500m, having dominated the Australian junior circuit. Liam Brown, 18, secured his spot in the long jump with a personal best of 7.85m at the national championships.
All three athletes train under head coach David Chen at the Beaton Park Athletics Centre. Chen noted the intense preparation required and praised the athletes' resilience amid challenging weather conditions and COVID-19 disruptions.
Impact on Local Athletics
The achievement is expected to inspire younger athletes in the Illawarra. Local schools and community groups have already reached out to congratulate the athletes. The club plans to host a celebratory event before the championships, which will be held in Cali, Colombia, in August.
Lee emphasized that the club's success is built on grassroots development and strong partnerships with schools and local government. She hopes the trio's success will attract more funding and talent to the region.
Looking Ahead
The World U20 Championships will feature over 1,500 athletes from more than 150 countries. The Australian team is among the strongest in recent years, and Athletics Wollongong's representatives are expected to be competitive. Smith aims for a medal in the 1500m, while Jones and Brown are targeting finals appearances.
Supporters can follow their progress via Athletics Australia's website and social media channels. The club is also planning live screenings of the events at Beaton Park for the local community.
