The WAFL has reclaimed the Haydn Bunton Jnr Cup in emphatic fashion, defeating the SANFL by 36 points at Leederville Oval on Saturday afternoon. It marked the first time in a decade that the Black Swans had tasted victory on home soil in this prestigious state football clash.
Dominant Display Secures Trophy
From the opening bounce, Western Australia asserted their authority, booting five goals in the first term to set up a commanding lead. The visitors from South Australia fought back valiantly in the second quarter, but WA’s relentless pressure and superior ball movement proved too much to handle.
Leading by 23 points at the main break, the WAFL extended their advantage in the third quarter, holding the SANFL to just two goals while adding four of their own. The final term was a mere formality, with WA running out comfortable winners 15.12 (102) to 9.12 (66).
Key Performers Shine
Midfielder Jye Bolton was instrumental for the winners, collecting 32 disposals and driving his side forward with precision. Forward Tyler Keitel booted four goals, while ruckman Mitch Dobson dominated the hit-outs, giving WA first use of the ball.
For the SANFL, midfielder Luke Dunstan worked tirelessly, amassing 28 touches, while forward Liam McBean kicked three goals in a losing effort.
Historic Win on Home Soil
The victory was particularly sweet for the WAFL, who had not won the Haydn Bunton Jnr Cup at home since 2014. The last time they hosted the match, they fell short by 11 points in a thrilling contest. This time, there was no such drama, as WA controlled proceedings from start to finish.
WAFL coach Mark Webb praised his team’s composure and intensity. “We knew coming in that we had to bring our best footy, and the boys delivered. To get the win in front of our home fans is something special,” he said.
Looking Ahead
With the cup retained, attention now turns to the upcoming WAFL season, where clubs will vie for supremacy. The state team’s performance has provided a significant boost for local footy, showcasing the depth of talent in Western Australia.
The SANFL will be eager to bounce back when they host the next edition of the interstate clash in 2025.
