Jaidyn Stephenson Maintains Optimism Following Port Adelaide Setback

Former AFL rising star award winner Jaidyn Stephenson has shared a positive perspective after facing a significant setback in his attempt to return to professional football. News broke on Saturday that the 27-year-old had not secured a position on Port Adelaide's list, concluding a nearly three-month trial period with the club.

Stephenson's Comeback Journey and Retirement Background

Stephenson initially retired from the AFL at the end of the 2024 season. He spent last year playing local football before deciding to pursue a comeback for the current season. His efforts included a rigorous training stint with Port Adelaide, where he aimed to prove his readiness for top-level competition.

Just three weeks ago, reports suggested Stephenson was a strong favorite, described as a $1.03 chance to earn a spot. However, he was ultimately released only two weeks before the new campaign begins.

Stephenson's Statement and Club Appreciation

In a social media post, Stephenson confirmed the outcome, stating, "To save me answering all the messages, unfortunately I haven't been offered a spot at Port." He expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity, adding, "I'm very appreciative of the opportunity Port Adelaide gave me to train on and have made some great friends in Adelaide. Wishing the club all the best for season 2026 and beyond."

Performance During Trial and Training Impact

During his trial, Stephenson positioned himself as a forward target in intraclub matches, kicking two goals in a recent performance. However, he was not selected for a top-level scratch match against the Adelaide Crows on Friday. Instead, he played in the corresponding reserves clash, where he added two more goals to his tally.

His departure leaves three other train-on players vying for spots at Port Adelaide: East Fremantle small forward Mitch Zadow, former Geelong midfielder Ted Clohesy, and Norwood defender Balyn O'Brien.

Career Highlights and Teammate Endorsement

Stephenson's AFL career includes an impressive start, with 38 goals in his debut season. Over his time in the league, he accumulated 122 games playing for Collingwood and North Melbourne before his initial retirement.

Port Adelaide forward Jack Lukosius praised Stephenson's efforts during the trial, noting, "He's definitely still got all the talent that made him a great player early in his career." Lukosius highlighted Stephenson's dedication, saying, "He has come in with kind of everything you'd want from a train-on — he's been training hard, doing all his extras, and ticking every box. So he's putting his best foot forward, that's for sure, and I think the group has accepted him."

Lukosius also remarked on Stephenson's fitness level, stating, "It hasn't stood out that he's played local footy last year at all. He's come in in a good spot. I think he must have done the work back end of the year into the off-season to give himself every chance — he's looking like an AFL footballer."
