Fremantle Dockers' Jaeger O'Meara Praises Team Depth Ahead of 2026 AFL Season
O'Meara: Fremantle's Depth and Health Key for 2026 AFL

Fremantle Dockers veteran Jaeger O'Meara has expressed his enthusiasm for the team's robust health and impressive depth as they gear up for the 2026 AFL season. In a significant shift from last summer, the Dockers are entering pre-season games with a much healthier squad, positioning them for a potential surge up the ladder.

Improved Health and Depth for Fremantle

O'Meara declared that Fremantle will approach the upcoming pre-season matches in a vastly better condition than last year. The team has largely avoided major injury dramas throughout the pre-season, with only minor setbacks for ruckman Sean Darcy (calf) and Cooper Simpson (hip) causing any concern. This contrasts sharply with the previous season, where key players like Alex Pearce, Sean Darcy, Luke Ryan, James Aish, Nat Fyfe, and Hayden Young were all unavailable for early matches.

Strong Representation in AFL Origin Game

The Dockers' depth is further highlighted by having five players—Caleb Serong, Jordan Clark, Luke Jackson, Shai Bolton, and Jaeger O'Meara—selected for next week's AFL Origin game. Despite this, Fremantle still has the capacity to field two strong squads for match practice during their Community Camp in Bunbury, showcasing their enhanced roster strength.

O'Meara reflected on the challenges of last season, noting that many senior players missed full pre-seasons, which significantly impacted the team. "Last year a lot of our guys that were not getting full pre-seasons were a lot of our senior guys which hurt," he said. "Young, Moose, Switta was out for a little while." However, he emphasised that the current group is in a much healthier position, with most senior players having had excellent lead-ins to the season.

New Additions and Returning Players

Fremantle has bolstered their squad with the additions of Melbourne defender Judd McVee and Collingwood ruckman Mason Cox at the end of last season. Additionally, Corey Wagner and Matthew Johnson are set to return after being injured in the build-up to the finals, further enhancing the team's options.

O'Meara highlighted the intense competition for selection that this depth creates. "I'm excited by that," he stated. "We've got a number of guys who can play in the midfield. It's a real strength of our squad at the minute. There's going to be some guys who are disappointed who don't get selected for round one." He described this as a great problem to have, particularly given the midfield's depth.

O'Meara's Flexibility and Role Adaptability

O'Meara also discussed his own role within the team, noting his flexibility to play multiple positions. "One of my strengths is my flexibility to be able to play a number of roles," he explained. "I've played a little bit of half-back this pre-season. Given we have an extra on the bench this year, that might be something we go to throughout the season." This adaptability could prove crucial as Fremantle navigates the demands of the 2026 AFL campaign.

Overall, with a healthier squad, strategic new signings, and fierce internal competition, the Fremantle Dockers are poised to make a strong impact in the upcoming season, as veteran Jaeger O'Meara confidently leads the charge.
