Australian NFL Fans Outraged Over Exorbitant MCG Ticket Prices for Historic Clash
Australian NFL enthusiasts have been left seething after the initial release of tickets for the historic showdown at the Melbourne Cricket Ground later this year. The highly anticipated match between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers is scheduled for Friday, September 11, with early demand indicating a potential sell-out of the 100,000-seat venue.
Ticket Release Sparks Widespread Frustration
General public tickets are not available until next Wednesday, but Melbourne Cricket Club members and select corporate pre-sale packages were offered today, leading to a chaotic scene. The queue for MCC tickets exceeded 80,000 before sales commenced at 10am AEDT, and fans were met with a rude shock upon accessing the purchasing platform.
Prices soared to unprecedented levels, with reserved seats near the back of the top deck retailing for $350, first-level seats exceeding $600, and prime level-one seats hitting the $900 mark. These costs are in addition to annual membership fees, adding to the financial burden. Meanwhile, corporate packages were listed for over $2000, further exacerbating the discontent among supporters.
Social Media Erupts with Complaints
Fans took to social media to vent their frustrations over the exorbitant prices and technical glitches. Many reported issues with MCC barcodes not working, leading to missed opportunities despite high demand. One fan exclaimed, "Omg these tickets are miles more expensive than advertised by MCC," while another lamented, "A very poor experience (again). Trying to unlock tickets and asking to check offer code... which does not work."
Others expressed disbelief at the costs, with one supporter noting, "How could these Americans do this to us with these ticket prices," and another joking about selling stocks to afford two tickets worth $850 each. Technical problems were rampant, as fans described seats showing as available but being impossible to purchase, with messages like "these tickets are no longer available" appearing repeatedly.
Rare Positive Feedback Amidst Chaos
Amid the outcry, a rare happy fan shared a smooth experience, stating, "Worked fine with me. Logged in when required 73rd in queue straight in. Can’t wait. Go Niners." However, this was an exception in a sea of complaints about the ticketing process, which is understood to have been handled entirely by the NFL.
Teams Express Reservations About the Event
While fans are still expected to fill the MCG despite the unusual Friday morning kickoff, the participating teams have shown less enthusiasm. The long flight, significant time difference, and lack of a bye week after the match have drawn criticism from 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan. He stated earlier this week, "I don’t see any pro (to the game). It’s cool for the league to play globally. I think that’s awesome. But as far as the team doing it, no, there’s not much benefit to it."
This historic NFL clash in Melbourne continues to generate buzz, but the controversy over ticket pricing and availability threatens to overshadow the excitement for many Australian fans.
