Milan Murdock Realises AFL Dream with West Coast Eagles After WAFL Dominance

Milan Murdock has been celebrated as the ultimate symbol of perseverance after securing a rookie contract with the West Coast Eagles, finally achieving his long-held AFL ambition. The 25-year-old midfielder, known for his standout performances in the WAFL, is set to sign the deal through the pre-season supplemental selection period, filling the roster spot left vacant by Noah Long's season-ending knee injury.

Years of Near-Misses and Unwavering Determination

Murdock's path to the AFL has been marked by close calls and relentless effort. Last year, he underwent a medical with West Coast during the mid-season rookie draft after Jake Waterman was moved to the inactive list, but the Eagles ultimately selected younger Norwood player Jacob Newton. Despite this setback, West Coast maintained interest in Murdock, with coach Andrew McQualter reportedly a strong admirer of his talents.

His impressive resume includes three Simpson Medals—one from East Fremantle's 2023 premiership win and two for Western Australia in State Games—along with three Lynn Medals as the Sharks' fairest and best player. Yet, until now, the state league superstar had been overlooked for AFL opportunities.

Coaches and Peers Praise Murdock's Resilience

East Fremantle coach Bill Monaghan highlighted Murdock's persistence, hard work, and refusal to abandon his dreams. "Milan is a ripper. His CV at WAFL level is outstanding, and he's a driven kid who many believe should have been on an AFL list earlier," Monaghan told The West Australian. "He's the poster boy for not giving up. Every time he missed out, he sought ways to improve. At 25, it's later than hoped, but he's earned his shot through self-belief and relentless effort."

Monaghan noted the additional challenge Murdock faced due to his 180cm stature, often cited as a barrier in drafts. "It's doubly hard for a smaller player to constantly hear that size is holding them back. His resilience through six or seven drafts is remarkable, and he's a pleasure to coach from a great family."

Murdock's Work Ethic and On-Field Excellence

In an interview with The West Sport Show last year, Murdock shared his dedication to football. "I find it easy because I love footy so much. It's like a big hobby. Even after long days in the heat, I push through with extra training sessions, arriving early to work on my skills. That extra effort is what gives me an edge," he explained.

Renowned as a tough inside midfielder, Murdock has averaged over 25 disposals per game for the past four seasons and ranks among the WAFL's top tacklers. His versatility shines in roles as a dynamic forward, exemplified by his 2023 grand final performance with 27 disposals, six tackles, seven inside 50s, and a goal.

Future Role with the Eagles

Monaghan speculated on Murdock's potential role at West Coast, suggesting he might be utilized as a small forward despite his midfield strengths. "He's won Simpson Medals with significant time forward, like in the 2023 grand final where he played as a high half-forward. West Coast will need to decide, but his agility, work-rate, and defensive appetite make him adaptable. I expect he'll play forward with occasional onball duties, not as a small back," he said.

This signing underscores the value of persistence in sports, as Murdock's years of WAFL dominance finally translate into an AFL opportunity, inspiring others with his story of unwavering commitment.
